AP883-F Flash Memory & Power Management
December 2003
Mini printer packs flash memory and
convenient power management

Able Systems has enhanced its AP863 mini printer, including flash memory, flexible peak current management, and increased charger input voltage limit.

Now with flash memory, the AP863-F can be reprogrammed easily during manufacture and configuration, or in the field by a service agent or by the user. End user products incorporating the AP863-F can be built offshore at low cost and later configured by a local agent before or during installation. This eases inventory management and reduces delivery time for customers. Last minute changes can also be made quickly with little time or cost penalty. Not only that, upgrades and fixes can be applied on the fly without requiring a hardware change. Depending on the deployment, these upgrades may also be supplied by e-mail to remote locations and installed into the printer via a simple utility. Flash also delivers greater flexibility to apply new fonts. This can be done through a complete firmware update or by providing a font creation application for the end-user to make desired modifications.

Additional enhancements include peak current management that allows a PSU rated below 1.6A to drive the AP863-F, with a speed derating.

Changes to the charge current regulation circuit also now allow charger input voltages as high as 26V, easing charger design constraints without the risk of excessive heating.

The AP863-F also includes the established AP800-series benefits, which include the 'speed-feed' semi-automatic paper loading mechanism for convenience and ease of use. Like other printers in the AP800 range, it uses a fixed head, thermal dot line printing mechanism and prints characters or graphics at a typical rate of 40mm per second - an exceptionally fast print speed from such a small mini-printer. There are flexible charger options including a car charger, direct mains charger or battery pack, each of which can also be used to deliver operating power to the printer.

There are also features to simplify paper loading and feeding, as well as paper out and paper low indications. Printer status indicator LEDs are arrayed in the same way as other AP863 variants. A number of LED pattern definitions may be implemented, including custom patterns.
